Jazz nodes
Compose from a lead sheet. A chord-symbol vocabulary (Cmaj7#11, D-7b5, G7alt, Eb6/9, slash chords) feeds chord-scale theory, jazz voicings, guide-tone lines and reharmonization — every node speaks a line of changes, so the family chains end to end.
| Node | Inputs | Outputs | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chord Symbol | string symbol ("Cmaj7", "G7alt", "Dm7/G") number octave (default: 3) |
midicents pitches list pitch classes number root string quality · symbol |
Parses a jazz chord symbol — maj/min/dim/aug/ø, sus, 6/9, the 7–13 tertian stack, the alterations b5 #5 b9 #9 #11 b13, the catch-all alt, and slash basses — into chord tones (a root-position midicent stack), pitch classes, the root and a canonical quality. The lead-sheet entry point for the jazz family; wire Symbol into Chord Scale. |
| Chord Scale | string symbol string prefer (auto / lydian / altered / diminished / …) number octave number key · string key mode |
number[] scale (cents) midicents pitches number[] tensions · avoid string name |
Chord-scale theory — the scale you improvise and voice over a chord: Dorian over a ii-7, Mixolydian over a V7, the Altered scale over a V7alt, Lydian over a maj7#11, Locrian ♮2 over a ø7. Emits the scale as cents-from-root (feed Scale Quantize) and as realized midicents, plus the available tensions and avoid notes. A Key resolves minor chords by degree (iii→Phrygian, vi→Aeolian). |
| Voicing | string symbol string type (shell / guide / rootless A–B / close / drop-2 / drop-3) number octave midicents lead (previous voicing) |
midicents pitches string roles number bass string name |
Voice a chord the way a player does: shell (R-3-7), guide tones (3-7), Bill-Evans rootless A (3-5-7-9) and B (7-9-3-5), close, and the drop-2 / drop-3 spreads. Lead register-locks the top voice to the previous chord for smooth changes. On altered chords the natural 5 is swapped for a stated b13/#11, so a voicing never sounds a tone the chord lacks. Distinct from the SATB chorale voicer. |
| Guide-Tone Lines | string symbols (changes, e.g. "Dm7 G7 Cmaj7") number register (octave) |
midicents upper · lower string roles string changes · number count |
Threads two guide-tone lines (the 3rds and 7ths) through a progression, where the 7th of one chord steps into the 3rd of the next and common tones are held. The clearest view of why changes flow, and ready countermelody / inner-voice material. Wire Upper and Lower into two Voices or into Counter-line. |
| Reharmonize | string symbols (changes) number tritone sub, ii–V insertion, diminished passing, modal interchange, Coltrane (each on/off) number intensity (0–1) · seed number key |
string changes (reharmonized) string original number count string summary |
The “avoid the obvious” engine. Recolors a progression with tritone subs (G7→D♭7), inserted ii–Vs, chromatic diminished passing chords, modal interchange (IV→iv, ii→iiø7) and full Coltrane / Giant-Steps changes over a ii–V–I. Outputs reharmonized changes that chain into Guide-Tone Lines, Voicing or Chord Scale. The jazz cousin of the classical Reharmonize. |
